Sight words are non-phonetic and can't be sounded out.  Teaching sight words takes a completely different approach than when teaching the children individual letters for reading and spelling.  When teaching sight words we leave no room for guessing because it is said that for every time a child spells a sight word wrong, they have to spell it right at least 10 times to undo what they learned by spelling it wrong only once.  So we tell the kids exactly how to spell the word and we correct immediately when an error is made.
