A common problem I hear homeschoolers and tutors ask is 'where is the best place to begin teaching reading? Or spelling? And how can I help a student improve their writing?'
I have a great solution for all these problems. I suggest you do an assessment , and use it as a benchmark, updating it every lesson until the child has attained mastery of each component in the assessment.
This takes all the stress, guesswork and frustration out of the learning process, helping you know exactly what to teach, and the order to teach it in.
I use my charting documents in every lesson, and it makes class and course planning so much easier.
I suggest that you assess each student , including their ability to
recognize the sounds each letter makes (the name of the letter is not as important as knowing the sound it makes)
recognize and say the blends of letters in the English language
test their ability to recognize and say sight words,
check to see how well
a student can write what they hear (letters, sight words, sentences)
To help you have the same ease of lesson prep and success in teaching, I have developed the system I have used for years into a complete toolkit.
It's available for sale in my shop, and it includes the sight word drill deck and phoneme (alphabet letters) drill deck and more (a total of 19 files in total). The video tutorial walks you through how to conduct and actual assessment, step by step.
Since you can re-use it for every student, and through out their journey to full fluency, it's a great set of foundational tools to have in your teaching toolkit.
Here's the link to it in my shop: https://www.timetoshineteaching.com/product-page/assessment-toolkit
I also have a whole webinar that answers many questions that people ask, related to how to plan for success in teaching reading, spelling and printing. Just contact me to get the upcoming dates for it, or to ask for the replay.
